It’s super easy to make summer treats for your dog to beat the heat. The snacks can be as simple as filling an ice cube tray with chicken broth or water and kibble. After coming back from a walk toss your pup one of these ice cubes – and you and the pooch are good to go.
Another super simple idea is to seal the small hole of a Kong or other hollow chew toy with peanut butter. Then add chicken broth (or water) and a stick of beef jerky or your dog’s kibble. Freeze for a yummy yet slightly messy outdoor treat.
Steer clear of grapes and raisins as they can cause kidney damage for cats and dogs. Citrus fruits like lemons, limes, and grapefruit as well as persimmons can cause an upset stomach.
Whole-Fruit Pupsicles Recipe:
Mix (4) cups of water, (1) cup chopped fresh fruit & (1) tablespoon of molasses (dissolved in the water) in a bowl.
Make sure the fruit that your pup loves the most has the pits and seeds discarded.
Pour into popsicle molds or ice cube trays and freeze until solid.
For an added treat use a carrot stick or your dog’s favorite healthy, long crunchy treat as the popsicle stick!
Allow the mixture to partially set and insert the “stick” into each popsicle, then allow it to freeze completely.
